Chapter Twelve

Something stirred me awake, and I realized Liam had shifted slightly next to me. At some point overnight, I had turned to my side. Liam had followed suit, leaving his arm draped over my waist. All said and done, I didn’t hate it. I hadn’t shared a bed since my college boyfriend, Kyle, and I had broken up not long after graduation. Apparently, I’d missed being held. No matter how strange the circumstances.

I glanced out the rectangular skylight that had been made out of some hatch used for who knew what back in the room’s hayloft days. The gray sky said it was after daybreak, though I couldn’t tell how far after with it still drizzling. If I could only ignore all of the baggage we would no doubt be unpacking once Liam was awake, it would be the perfect lazy Sunday.

Something rattled against the hardwood floors, and Liam jerked slightly behind me. He blinked, looking around, confused, before his eyes hit me. “Oh.”

“Good morning to you, too.” I propped myself up on my elbows while I tried to remember where I had put my phone last night. “Is that yours or mine?”

It seemed to click in Liam’s mind that a phone was buzzing. He found where his jeans had been dropped off the side of the bed. “Mine.” He pulled his cell out of his pocket and looked at the screen. With a slight wince he answered, “Yea?”

“Where are you?” Colm’s voice came over the line loud enough for me to hear.

“I told Bridget I’d drop something off. I stopped by hers on my way out this morning.”

“You were meant to be at Mrs. Taylor’s half an hour ago!”

“I’m on my way now.” He managed to step into his boxers and pull them up with one hand. From the face he made, they hadn’t entirely dried in the pile we’d left them in.

“You’d best be. I don’t need Mrs. Taylor doing my head in all day about being made late because you didn’t arrive on time.”

“She doesn’t need to be there. She could’ve left for church if she wanted. And, I said, I’m on my way now. I’ll see you after Mass.”

Colm began to say something else, but Liam hung up. He tossed his phone on the end of the bed as he set to straightening out the rest of his clothes.

“Somewhere you need to be?” I sat up, not bothering to cover myself as the blanket slipped down. Half just to see his reaction.

He glanced at me. His fingers fumbled for a second before he dropped his gaze and focused on his belt. “Yea. Sorry. Mrs. Taylor had a tree fall on her property yesterday, and my da volunteered me to see to it, since I don’t attend Mass. I was meant to be there at half eight.”

“Do you think it was smart to say you were here?”

He met my eyes again, hesitant. “Did you not want me to?”

I suppressed a smile. Fumble-y, slightly unsure Liam was definitely more adorable than surly, chip-on-his-shoulder Liam.
